100 Höjdare - The Monochrome Set - Volume, Contrast, Brilliance..., 1983

Nån gång där runt 83-84 läste jag en artikel om The Monochrome Set i fanzinet Larm, den gjorde mig tillräckligt nyfiken att köpa den här samlingsskivan. Jag kan fortfarande komma ihåg vissa formuleringar i artikeln där författaren raljerade över Adam Ant som spelade med musikerna i bandet under en kort period.

Efter det läste jag aldrig en rad om bandet igen, någonsin, så det vore verkligen att sträcka på sanningen att kalla bandet ett kultband. Visst, legenden säger att Johnny Marr och Morrissey bondade när de upptäckte att båda älskade bandet. Franz Ferdinand har föga överraskande nämnt bandet i intervjuer. Och Fatboy Slim har gjort en cover på He's Frank med Iggy Pop på sång. Allt det här upptäckte jag genom google idag, för det här är en obskyr skiva.

Akademisk postpunk är den korta beskrivningen av musiken. Lester Squares gitarrer tar vilka vägar de vill och sångaren Bids texter överraskar också med humor och udda vändningar. Men när man kommer underfund med alla lager av gitarrer så finns det under allt en räcka käcka melodier som egentligen borde bli hits allihop. Lyssna på Avanti (Ten Don'ts For Honeymooners) t ex.

Sometime around 83-84 I read an article in a swedish fanzine called Larm about The Monochrome Set that made me curious enough to buy this compilation album. I can still remember how the author heckled Adam Ant who for a short period played with some of the band members.

After that I never heard about the band again, so calling them a cult band would be stretching it. Sure, according to legend Morrissey and Johnny Marr bonded when they realized both of them loved the band. Franz Ferdinand mentions them in interviews, not very surprising. And Fatboy Slim has made a cover of He's Frank with Iggy Pop. All this I learned today through Google, not many people has heard of them sadly.

Academic post punk is the short description of the music. Lester Square's guitars take whatever road that pleases them and singer Bid's lyrics are full of surprises and humour. But when you figure it all out, there's a couple of great songs hidden in there that should have been hits. Listen top Avanti (Ten Don'ts For Honeymooners) for instance.
