Här kommer sommaren

Om du vill ta ett steg vidare med ditt fotograferande och har en lite mer avancerad kamera än mobilen, kan det vara dags att börja fota i RAW. Det låter lite läskigt kanske och själv hade jag i början fullt sjå med att lära mig hur kameran fungerade och sköt på det här steget så länge jag kunde. Det ångrar jag idag.

Bilderna jag fotat i JPG är vad de är, inte mycket att göra åt, medan de i RAW kan redigeras om till högre nivåer än vad jag var kapabel till när jag tog dom.

Bilden ovan är tagen i Fiskebäck vid sextiden igår kväll. Ljuset kommer in framifrån sidan vilket innebär att både himmel och vatten är väldigt ljust. Horisonten och fiskargubbarna blir silhuetter. Det första jag gjorde efter importen till Lightroom är att dra ner högdagrarna nästan i botten. Det gör att jag får fram mer detaljer i himlen och vattnet.

Skuggorna drog jag iväg åt andra hållet, vilket gör att jag får liv i horisonten och fler detaljer hos fiskarna. På några sekunder har bilden gått från att varit platt och trist, till åtminstone lite roligare.

I RAW formatet finns alltså mer information, men man måste själv bestämma vad man vill göra med den informationen. Fotar du i JPG bestämmer kameran detta åt dig. Lite extra tryck i färgerna, okänslig brusreducering osv.

När jag är nöjd med vad jag gjort i Lightroom exporterar jag filen i TIFF formatet för att behålla lite svängrum i Photoshop och Nik där jag jobbar vidare med färg, ljus, kontrast, brusreducering och eventuellt skärpa. När man väl har lärt sig detta tar det inte många minuter, men det är väl värt det.

If you want to take your photography a step further and own a more advanced camera than a cell phone, you should consider shooting in RAW. It may sound scary, and when I started out I was so busy learning how my camera worked that the concept of learning this was too daunting for me to take on. I regret that now.

The images I shot in JPG are what they are, while the ones in RAW can be re-edited to levels I wasn't capable of when I took them.

The picture above is from yesterday evening. The light is coming from the side which means that the sky and water are very bright and the horizon and the fishermen mere silhuettes. The first thing I did after importing it to Lightroom was to pull the highlights slider almost all the way down. That way I get more details in the clouds and the water.

I pulled the shadows slider almost all the way up which brings life and details to the horizon and the men. In a few seconds I turned a flat and uninspiring image into, well, a little less flat and uninspiring image.

So shooting in RAW will give you an image with more information, but you have to decide what to do with this information. Shooting in JPG leaves these decisions to the camera, more color, insensitive noise reduction and so on.

When I'm pleased with what I've done in Lightroom, I'll export the file as TIFF to get some leeway in Photoshop and Nik where I'll continue to work with color, contrast, light, noise reduction and maybe sharpness. When you have learnt all this, it won't take more than a few minutes, it's well worth it.
